The Power of Versatility in Commercial Storytelling
In the world of visual storytelling, versatility is more than a creative asset—it’s a powerful tool that enables brands to connect with audiences across a wide array of industries. At Ballad Pictures, versatility is not just about transitioning from one project type to another; it’s about deeply understanding the unique voice and message of each brand and crafting a story that resonates. From music videos to fresh produce commercials, each project showcases our dedication to the art of storytelling and our ability to adapt to the individual needs of our clients. Here, we’ll explore three diverse projects—Sub Pop Records, Kroger’s QFC Fresh, and UBCO Jackson—to illustrate how we approach storytelling across different sectors.
Bringing Music to Life with Sub Pop Records
Our collaboration with Sub Pop Records and Nordstrom on a music video for Shaina Shepherd’s cover of Lee Field’s “Never Be Another You” is a powerful example of how storytelling in music can create an emotional connection with viewers. Shot at the iconic Paramount Theater in Seattle, this video had a dual objective: to honor the history and grandeur of the venue while capturing the essence of Shaina Shepherd’s artistry.
With each shot, we sought to reflect Shaina’s powerful stage presence and soulful voice. Filming in the Paramount’s historic interior allowed us to layer the video with a sense of place, merging her musical talent with the theater’s cultural legacy. We used strategic lighting, close-ups, and dynamic angles to emphasize the emotion in her performance. The stage lights set a mood that made each shot feel both intimate and grand, creating an immersive experience for viewers.
By focusing on Shaina’s energy and expressive vocals, we captured a story of talent, elegance, and passion that resonated deeply with audiences. This project demonstrated our ability to translate the raw power of music into visuals that evoke feeling—an approach that keeps the viewer engaged and connected, and highlights how cinematic elements can elevate a brand’s message even within the music industry.
Fresh Stories from the Grocery Aisle: Kroger QFC Fresh
Telling a story for a brand in the grocery industry presents a different set of challenges and opportunities. For our work with Kroger’s QFC Fresh, our goal was to showcase the freshness, quality, and appeal of their produce. In this case, the challenge lay in making something as familiar as grocery shopping feel vibrant, exciting, and meaningful. We approached this project with a focus on the product itself, using creative techniques to bring out the natural beauty of the produce and create a “farm-to-table” narrative.
To achieve this, we used specialized lenses, such as probe lenses, to get close-up shots of the fruits and vegetables, making each item appear larger-than-life. These shots allowed viewers to see the textures, colors, and freshness of the produce up close, creating a sensory experience. Natural lighting during the “golden hour” also played a crucial role, giving the visuals a warm, inviting feel that aligns with Kroger’s brand values of quality and freshness.
This project required a different tone from our music video work, focusing less on drama and more on evoking a sense of trust and appeal. Our intention was to make audiences feel confident in Kroger’s commitment to quality, emphasizing the farm-to-table journey that ensures their products are fresh, wholesome, and ready to enjoy. Through careful framing, lighting, and shot selection, we crafted a visual story that aligns with Kroger’s mission and appeals to the senses of their audience.
Adventurous Storytelling with UBCO Jackson
Our work with UBCO, an electric utility motorcycle brand, took us to the rugged landscapes of Jackson, Wyoming, where we captured a story of adventure, freedom, and eco-consciousness. The project involved showcasing UBCO’s electric bikes in their element, among natural landscapes that highlight the brand’s commitment to sustainability and exploration. This narrative required a balance of both subtlety and grandeur, as the goal was to let the landscapes speak for themselves while emphasizing the bike’s integration with nature.
For this project, we used drone footage and wide-angle shots to capture the vastness of the terrain, highlighting the contrast between the bike’s innovative design and the untouched wilderness. By shooting during magic hour, we took advantage of the natural lighting to create warm, ambient visuals that emphasized the connection between the rider, the bike, and the environment. Close-ups of the rider navigating through rocky trails and dirt paths added an element of realism and adventure, allowing viewers to experience the thrill of exploration that UBCO stands for.
This project showcases our versatility in adapting to different brand messages. The narrative here was about more than just a product—it was about a lifestyle that values freedom, sustainability, and a deep connection with the natural world. Through thoughtful shot selection, location choice, and attention to detail, we were able to communicate UBCO’s mission to a like-minded audience.
Why Versatility Matters in Brand Storytelling
Our work with Sub Pop Records, Kroger QFC Fresh, and UBCO Jackson illustrates the importance of versatility in commercial storytelling. Each of these projects demanded a different approach, tone, and visual style to effectively communicate the brand’s message. Whether it’s creating an emotional connection through music, building trust in a grocery brand, or inspiring a sense of adventure in a motorcycle company, the ability to adapt our storytelling techniques allows us to deliver impactful, authentic narratives that resonate with diverse audiences.
